INSIDE THE MIND

There is something beautiful about being able to visually grasp the grit of an artist’s inspiration by simply looking at their work. I tend to question a piece of art from each rough line down to the last sweeping stroke, digging deep for a key into the creative mind behind it’s beauty.  But when I am sat face to face with the enigmatic allure of a photographed model with painted elongated legs, presiding over her aluminium background with painterly elegance and poise, I demand to know more.

Q & A: ROSIE EMERSON

How would you describe your aesthetic?

My short hand answer to this question if people ask is always ‘elongated ladies’, although I’d say collage is central to my work. In my early works this is more apparent, cutting up fashion magazines and combining them with painted bodies and hopelessly thin legs, but  even the ink drawing and photo shoots I’ve been working on.

BRAND PROFILE: SALASAI

SALASAI

There is a real power in this modern era of androgynous design. Clothes that make a man and a woman equals in the hall of style, while challenging traditional norms through fit and construction created with daring abandon. I have seen it flashed into lookbooks, stomped up and down many a runway, but I don’t think anybody has achieved it quite like Salasai

LAUNCH: WESTFIELD

100 YEARS OF FASHION

There is no better way to launch the long-awaited birth of a shopping centre than this.

The new Westfield, Stratford, East London, cannot put a foot wrong with their amazing opening campaign, where two dancers frolick through 100 years of fashion in 100 seconds! Sporting the very best of ten decades worth of style, the pair danced the years away in sixty different outfits -from turn of the century tailored suits capped off with bowler hats, Fifties gingham frocks and Seventies hippie-tastic flares, to Eighties plaid slacks teamed with punk rock leather.

Created by The Viral Factory and directed by Jake Lunt, the short film was shot in four separate locations in the Eastern part of the capital, all of which depict a real sense of early London life.

Having lived in East London in my yay day, I personally cannot wait for Westfield, Stratford to open its doors. The wallet’s in hand. The countdown is on. Let the fun begin!

The new Westfield Shopping Centre in Stratford, London, UK, will open on 13th September 2011. Brave the queues and check it out. Happy shopping!

INTERIORS: JONN COOLIDGE

LUXE THROUGH THE LENS

Framing the aesthetic, mood and cohesion of a space with one click is no mean feat. Except when its original style and tonal balance are born from an acute eye, with a rich tenure of snapping away at the best of interior design. Photographer, Jonn Coolidge,  can capture the God in every detail. His niche creativity has afforded us a visual key into some of the most illustrious homes. And now, thanks to The New York Times, this finally includes his own.

ICON: ALEXANDER MCQUEEN Dress No. 13, Spring/Summer 1999.

Kissing the sky. To a fellow British Icon. You defied the bullshit and got the job done. The theatre and raw spontaneity of this design is sublime. A truly beautiful memory. Sleep sweetly Alexander.

INSPIRATION

“As the collection was inspired by abandoned ivy-colored mansions with dusty chandeliers, and delicate details that become more beautiful as they disintegrate, we felt that it seemed fitting that the collection premiere in a setting evocative of an old European church. The collection embodies memories that capture an ethereal romance, a playful darkness and a sensual fragility.  Luxurious and haunted with subtle sexual tones this will be unlike anything Vancouver has ever seen before.”

COLLECTION: OBAKKI FW 2011

A HEAVENLY ORDER

The theatre of clothes always comes alive on its most scrutinized stage: the runway. But when it’s played out well and its design narrative is sharp, the artistic lustre, tight construction and tonal fabrics make for a truly divine performance. With that said, Obakki is by far my favourite act.

Their latest show previewing their female Fall/Winter 2011 collection was a heavenly order, a catwalk running through the centre of the historic St Andrew’s-Wesley church, slicing the echoing acoustics clean, while soaking up an atmosphere aesthetically charged with sentinel stone arches, goth smoking candlelight and a lofty stain glass haze.
